Individual Nutrition Counseling

Yoga Therapy in the Treatment of Eating Disorders at CPC in New York City.

Patients at CPC have individual therapy sessions as well as group counseling.

Our special team of nutritionists at CPC has devoted their careers to working with adolescents and adults struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, exercise addiction, negative body image, emotional and compulsive eating, and food and weight preoccupation.

Individual nutrition counseling at CPC begins with a thorough consultation and evaluation during which the foundations of a trusting therapeutic relationship are established. During this appointment, it is the nutritionist’s goal to form an alliance with her patient and obtain a detailed understanding of the patient’s diet, weight and exercise history, current eating habits, food preferences and rituals, and medical status in order to establish a treatment plan including achievable short and long- term goals that are meaningful to the patient.

Our nutritionists understand that relationships with food are complicated and often times emotionally charged; therefore they work with their patients in a non-threatening, non-judgmental way and encourage them to share as little or as much as they are comfortable sharing in this first session. The frequency of nutrition follow-up sessions is determined collaboratively between the patient and the nutritionist. Most often, we find that patients benefit from weekly sessions in order to assess the adequacy of their nourishment, to discuss the feelings and sensations they experience related to nourishing themselves, and to make changes to meal plans and nutrition goals as indicated. Through this highly individualized counseling process, our nutritionists help their patients’ foster respectful and healthy relationships with food and their bodies.

Our nutritionists are very sensitive to the challenges, anxieties and fears that present during the recovery and healing process and they work with each patient within his/her comfort zone to make gradual and stable shifts for lasting change. Founded on a non-diet approach, our work emphasizes principles of mindful, intuitive eating while incorporating scientific data from current nutrition and medical research. Furthermore, our nutritionists practice a team approach to treatment and collaborate regularly with their patients’ therapists, psychiatrists and internists to offer the most comprehensive care.
